CNC Lathe for Heavy Metal Turning Applications - Xinheng

CNC Lathe for Heavy Metal Turning Applications

Heavy metal turning is very different from general-purpose CNC turning. When machining large shafts, rollers, cylinders, forgings, or other heavy industrial components, the machine must handle not only the workpiece dimensions but also high workpiece weight, large cutting forces, and substantial material removal.

For these applications, buyers should evaluate the complete machine structure—including guideway width, bed rigidity, spindle torque, chuck capacity, tailstock, workpiece support, and motor power—rather than selecting a CNC lathe only by swing over bed.

Industry

Heavy turning is commonly required in industries such as:

  • Heavy machinery manufacturing
  • Mining equipment
  • Steel and metallurgical equipment
  • Energy and power generation
  • Marine and shipbuilding
  • Large industrial equipment
  • Roller and cylinder manufacturing
  • Equipment repair and rebuilding

These industries often machine components that are much larger and heavier than ordinary production parts.

Xinheng’s heavy CNC lathe ranges cover different capacity levels. For example, the 970 mm guideway series supports workpieces up to 10 tons, while larger heavy-duty series are available for substantially heavier components.

Workpiece

Typical heavy-turning workpieces include:

Heavy shafts – transmission shafts, rotor shafts, mill shafts, and other large rotating components.

Rollers – industrial rollers and cylindrical components used in steel, mining, and manufacturing equipment.

Large sleeves and cylinders – thick-wall components requiring external and internal turning.

Forgings and castings – components that may have large machining allowances and uneven surfaces before finishing.

A heavy workpiece should never be evaluated by diameter alone.

For example, two shafts may both measure Φ800 mm, but a short 1-ton component and a long 8-ton shaft require very different bed structures, clamping systems, center support, and load capacities.

Process

Heavy metal turning often combines several operations on the same machine:

Facing → Rough OD Turning → Finish Turning → Boring → Grooving → Taper Turning → Threading

Among these processes, rough turning places particularly high demands on machine rigidity.

Large forgings or castings may require significant stock removal. As cutting depth and feed increase, the cutting forces transmitted through the tool, carriage, bed, spindle, and workpiece also increase.

Long heavy shafts create another challenge: workpiece support.

Even when a machine has sufficient swing and turning length, the workpiece may still require a tailstock, steady rest, or other support to reduce deflection and vibration during machining. Xinheng’s larger CNC lathe series can be configured with steady rests and follow rests for long and heavy workpieces.

Machine Requirements

1. Heavy and Rigid Bed Structure

A heavy workpiece and large cutting load require a strong machine foundation.

Guideway width is therefore an important parameter. Wider heavy-duty guideways are generally used as machine capacity, workpiece weight, and cutting load increase.

However, guideway width should be considered together with machine weight and overall bed construction, rather than used as an independent measure of rigidity.

2. High Workpiece Load Capacity

Always check the manufacturer’s specified maximum workpiece weight.

Xinheng’s current product ranges include approximately:

CNC Lathe SeriesMax. Workpiece Weight
550/600 mm guidewayUp to 4 tons
755 mm guidewayUp to 6 tons
970 mm guidewayUp to 10 tons
1100 mm heavy-dutyUp to 16 tons
1600 mm heavy-dutyUp to 32 tons

The appropriate machine should be selected according to the actual workpiece and setup.

3. Spindle Torque and Motor Power

Heavy turning usually requires lower spindle speeds and higher torque than small-part machining.

For large-diameter workpieces, spindle performance should therefore be evaluated according to the required cutting conditions rather than looking only at maximum spindle speed.

4. Suitable Chuck and Clamping

Large workpieces require secure clamping. Chuck diameter, jaw configuration, clamping method, and workpiece geometry should all be considered.

Irregular castings and forgings may require a large independent 4-jaw chuck or a customized clamping solution.

5. Tailstock and Steady Rest

For long shafts and rollers, the tailstock provides axial support, while a steady rest can support intermediate sections of the workpiece.

Xinheng’s 970 mm guideway CNC lathe uses a heavy-structure tailstock designed to withstand heavy cutting, with an electric rotary tailstock configuration for faster movement.

Recommended Model

The machine should be selected according to diameter + length + weight + machining allowance, rather than simply choosing the largest available lathe.

For medium and large industrial shafts, Xinheng’s 550/600 mm guideway CNC lathe series supports workpieces up to approximately 4 tons and includes configurations for shafts, pipes, and cylindrical components.

For larger shafts and heavy components, the 755 mm guideway series, including CK61100, CK61125, CK61140, and CK61160 configurations, provides larger swing capacities and heavier machine structures.

For long and heavy shafts, rollers, and cylinders, the 970 mm guideway series covers workpiece diameters up to approximately Φ1800 mm depending on model, workpiece lengths of 3000–8000 mm as standard listed configurations, and maximum workpiece weight up to 10 tons.

For much heavier applications, Xinheng also offers 1100 mm and 1600 mm guideway heavy-duty CNC lathes, with listed workpiece capacities reaching 16 and 32 tons respectively.

Before requesting a quotation, prepare the workpiece drawing, maximum diameter, overall length, required turning length, weight, material, roughing allowance, finished dimensions, tolerance, surface finish, clamping method, and production quantity.

For heavy metal turning, these details are more useful than simply asking for a “heavy-duty CNC lathe.” They allow the manufacturer to match the workpiece with the appropriate bed, guideway, spindle, chuck, tailstock, steady rest, motor power, and CNC configuration.
